Starting with American Pastoral (1997) and I Married a Communist (1998) and Human Stain, Philip Roth became a prominent figure in American literature by releasing the American Trilogy. Philip Roth, who is considered a strong candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year and is praised by the U.S. media as "the greatest novelist of our time"", has proved his literary achievement by winning the Pulitzer Prize, the Penn/Faulkner Prize, the Penn/Nabokov Prize, the Penn/Nabokov Prize, the Penn/Sol Bello Prize, the American Academy of Arts and Literature Gold Medal, and the Man Booker International Prize. He is also the first surviving writer to be named in the American non-profit organization Library of America. The world of works mainly focused on the mental panic of the main characters, dealing with the issues of isolation and alienation of modern people as the main themes of his work.

필립 로스는 <<미국의 목가>>를 시작으로 <<나는 공산주의자와 결혼했다>>, <<휴먼 스테인>>으로 이어지는 ‘미국 3부작’을 발표하면서 미국 문학의 거목으로 자리매김하게 되었다. 해마다 노벨문학상의 강력한 수상 후보로 점쳐지고, 미국 언론으로부터 "우리 시대 가장 뛰어난 소설가"라는 평을 듣는 필립 로스는 1950년대 말 첫 소설집 <굿바이, 콜럼버스>로 전미도서상을 수상하며 화려하게 데뷔한 이래 퓰리처상, 펜/포크너 상, 펜/나보코프 상, 펜/솔 벨로 상, 미국 예술문학아카데미 골드 메달, 맨부커 인터내셔널 상 등 유수의 문학상을 수상하며 그 문학적 성취를 증명했다. 또한 그는 미국 비영리 단체인 라이브러리 오브 아메리카에 최초로 이름을 올린 생존 작가이다. 작품 세계는 주로 주인공들의 정신적 공황에 집중하면서 현대인의 고립과 소외 문제를 작품의 주요 주제로 다루었다.
